Vicki Lloyd receives NSW Seniors Week Achievement Award

Award for reluctant volunteer

At The Premiers Gala Concert on Monday, Vicki Lloyd was awarded a NSW Seniors Week Achievement Award for her contributions to Health and Wellbeing.

Six years ago Vicki was asked to head up Gresford Grooves with tai chi classes and her dedication and generosity has lead to her receiving a 2011 NSW Seniors Week Achievement Awards.

Minister for Ageing Peter Primrose presented the awards which recognise outstanding leadership, initiative and contributions made by seniors and seniors’ organisations to the community.

Mr Primrose said the individuals and organisations were among those who made a positive contribution to their community.

“Each one of them generously devotes their time, resources and energy to helping others and I am sure that their stories will inspire others to live life to the fullest,” he said.

“Mrs Lloyd’s generosity to instruct weekly classes has benefited the health of many seniors in the Gresford and Dungog areas.

“Vicki is dedicated to helping seniors live a more wholesome and uplifting life.”

Mrs Lloyd was both honoured and humbled upon receiving the award.

“I am just a representative of a whole band of volunteers who make things work in our community,” she said.

Six years ago Belinda Munro from Dungog and District Neighbourcare asked Mrs Lloyd would she take a tai chi group at Gresford.

“I had family commitments, but she was persistent and said there was no-one else.

“I reluctantly agreed and now I can’t imagine life without these people.

“They give me more than I think I have given them.”

Mrs Lloyd said she meet many wonderful volunteers when she received the award in Sydney on Monday last week.

“They are all busy retirees, some are physically disabled but mentally active and still willing to lend a hand.

“I just hope this award encourages other people to volunteer.

“It will change your life and change it for the better.”

Gresford Grooves is run in the Terese Doyle Hall Mondays from 9-10am and then the Dungog Dazzlers follows at the Uniting Church Hall from 11.30-12.30.
